The first three weeks of BRIDGE CULTURE have celebrated Russia, India and Brooklyn with performances by some of New York City's hottest artists. Now the spotlight turns to Haiti.

"Contemporary Haitian culture is a creative mix of old world and new world traditions," said musician Buyu Ambroise. "This vibrant mix is manifested through music, religion, and language. For 50 years the Haitian community in NYC has grown and developed its own particular mode of cultural expression. I am a product of that," continued Abroise, "bridging the art and expressions of the island with the resilient and hardworking immigrant community of the city. My music has its roots in traditional Haitian sounds and rhythms but is influenced by modern American jazz."

Buyu Ambroise & the Blues in Red Band will perform at 5:00 p.m. For the full schedule, see below.

"Brooklyn Bridge Park has quickly become a sought after destination for Brooklynites and the borough's visitors" said Regina Myer, president of Brooklyn Bridge Park. "By hosting the Bridge Culture festival, we celebrate the vibrancy of Brooklyn's many communities with a month of cultural Saturdays at Pier 1."

BRIDGE CULTURE was conceived by artist/philanthropist Danny Simmons, a member of the Park's Board of Directors. "This program was developed to highlight the cultural and artistic diversity that makes Brooklyn the great destination that it is," said Mr. Simmons. "The city's new premiere park is a wonderful place, and we thank Bloomberg LP for helping us present Brooklyn to New York City and beyond."

BRIDGE CULTURAL was developed and is produced by Brian Tate, president of The Tate Group and co-founder of Full Spectrum Experience, Inc., which is producing the series "BRIDGE CULTURE offers a great way to build community among New Yorkers whose roots extend across the U.S. and around the world," said Mr. Tate. "Culture is the bridge that brings us together."

McLeod said she used the quite time to regroup and reassess the important things in her life and as such has made changes to the benefit of her well-being and continued success as a musician/vocalist with her husband and business partner Ray Naccari. Guyanese born British Baroness gets U.N. Appointment

Lady Amos given top UN humanitarian affairs job

Ban Ki-moon appoints Valerie Amos, who sat in Tony Blair's cabinet, after getting David Cameron's blessing.

Lady Amos, the first black woman to sit in the cabinet, was today appointed as the most senior UN official in charge of humanitarian affairs and emergency relief.

Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, announced the appointment of Amos as under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief after David Cameron gave his blessing.

Amos, 56, currently the British high commissioner to Australia, became the first black woman to sit in the cabinet when she replaced Clare Short for a brief stint as international development secretary in 2003. She then served as leader of the House of Lords until 2007 when Gordon Brown nominated her as the EU's special representative to the African Union.

British officials were delighted by the appointment of Amos, who will replace Sir John Holmes, the former British ambassador to Paris, to become the most senior British figure at the UN.

The appointment is made by the UN secretary general, though he did so after a signal from Cameron, who met Amos yesterday.

"This is a massively significant job, one of the top five at the UN," one source said. "It would be unthinkable for Britain not to have one of the top five jobs.

France has peacekeeping, the US has political affairs and China has health. It makes sense for Britain, which has pledged to meet the 0.7% target [to spend that amount of gross national income on overseas aid by 2013], to have this job."

Sources said that Cameron, who forwarded just one name to Ban Ki-moon's office, was not appointing a former Labour cabinet minister to try to recreate Tony Blair's famous "big tent" from the other side of the spectrum.

"This is not about big tentery," one source said. "Valerie got the job on merit. She was Africa minister in the Foreign Office before she became development secretary so Valerie is very well known there. She knows her way round. Valerie is also not seen as a political person."

Amos will replace Holmes who was appointed to the UN humanitarian affairs job in January 2007. There were not high hopes for Holmes, who was given the job as a consolation prize after Blair declined to appoint him as ambassador to Washington or head of the Foreign Office.

But Holmes threw himself into job. "The NGOs went for John because they saw him as a grey haired diplomat," one source said. "But he surprised everyone. He has been steady and highly competent."

Da'Ville's Visit to Maplewood Cafe, Delights Fans

Jamaican Singer Da`Ville on U.S. Promotional Tour

CaribWorldNews, MAPLEWOOD, NJ, Fri. July 23, 2010: Jamaican recording artist, Da`Ville, whose hit `Always On My Mind` was remixed with dancehall artiste Sean Paul is ramping up his presence in the U.S.

The singer was recently in New York for performances and also used the time to appear at iLand Breeze Café in Maplewood, New Jersey.

The artist was relaxed and happy to showcase his talent to the fans who showed up at the restaurant to chat and take photos with the singer.

The Guyanese owner of iLand Breeze Cafe, Avalia Moore, was just as excited to have Da`Ville drop in to her brand new café. `I want to keep supporting the community and to keep giving them reasons to love our community and to support our businesses,` she said. (Pictured: Da'Ville with Avalia Moore, VisionsInPictures Image)

Asked why he opted to come to the other side of the Hudson since he had other scheduled appearances in New Jersey, the singer told CWNN: `Everyone knows and comes to New York and of course it`s a great to be in New York, but it`s a pleasure to come to where you have small businesses that`s the heart of the community. These are the places that are keeping our culture alive even though we`re not in our actual homelands,` he said.

Fans young and old were truly surprised at the humility of the artiste who signed autographs and distributed samples of his latest single, `Wine U A Wine.`

iLand Breeze features a weekend buffet and the appearance of Da`Ville, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, meant a special classic Jamaican cuisine menu was featured, with guests enjoying Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken and more heartily. - By Allison Skeete/Special to CWNN
